Rekindled Friendship

I had this friend through out junior high and freshman year of high school. We hung out often and everyone believed that we were sisters. Supposedly we look alike. We hadn't seen each other in fourteen years because I moved to a different area the summer before our sophomore year. We've been connected through social media over the years but we've never had the opportunity get together. She just moved ten minutes from me so we decided to meet up. The photo below was taken back in 2002. Nearly non-existent eyebrows were in back then, by the way.

We met on Friday for lunch at 2. I was a little nervous, like I was about to go on a first date. It was as if no time had passed and yet we'd both done so much living since we'd seen each other last. We sat and talked for about two hours. Then we went to get coffee and sat and talked for another two hours. And then we thought it would be fun to go grab some drinks so we went over to the mall. 

We sat on the patio and enjoyed people watching while sipping our cocktails. 

My husband joined us and he ate dinner while we enjoyed round two. After that, the three of us walked around the mall. We got cupcakes for dessert and finally parted ways a little after 9. We arranged to meet up the next night too. She came over to our house. I cooked dinner and dessert. We drank a few more cocktails, this time the low cal homemade versions. We watched two movies and two episodes of The Real Housewives of Orange County. My husband was thrilled about that last part {just kidding}. I'm really glad she lives so close. We've already made so many plans and she's going to be my new workout buddy. 

Tater sure does love the weekends because he gets to crawl into mom and dad's bed and snuggle. 

We met my parents for lunch on Sunday at Bushfire. I ordered the chicken and rib combo - my fave. We did our normal Sunday grocery shopping at Trader Joe's and then we went home to relax and enjoy what was left of our weekend. I did not run at all this weekend and I have a lot of catching up to do {in case you were wondering, Michael}.

Four Years Ago

My mom reminded me that I ran my first 5K four years ago today. Her message to me  from that morning popped up on her Facebook. First of all, I can't believe it's been four years. Second of all, I ran this race only days before my Papa Tony passed away. I remember telling my dad after that I ran that race for my Papa Tony. I wanted him to be proud of me one last time before he left his earth. Third of all, I love that I have this photo {below} with my sister-in-law before she was even my sister-in-law. Her and my brother had recently started dating and I remember I was very cautious about getting close to her, as I am with everyone. Looking back, I wish I wouldn't have been so cautious with her because she's amazing and perfect for my brother.

When I pulled up these photos today, I'll admit, I was shocked and a little depressed at the same time. I've always seen myself as being heavy. I've never thought I looked thin but as I look as these photos I have to ask myself, "What were you thinking?" This was the smallest I had been in a long time and I'm pretty sure I've been fighting to get back to that point since then. I did zero strength training back then. Lift weights? Why? Cardio is what will make you lose weight! I spent hours on the elliptical and obviously, I had started running. I did the Couch to 5K program with a group of girls from church and we all ran the race together. I also remember being completely obsessed with what I ate. 

I sent my close friend these photos and told her how upset I was that I am not this size anymore. She reminded me that so many good things have happened in the past four years and that should mean so much more than my weight. I hadn't even met Stephen at this point. I was with my ex and I was not happy in that relationship. It's true. I'd much rather be happy than be thin. But I am going to continue my journey. I have so much more to accomplish. Let's see where the next four years take me. 

I'm happy to report that my mileage time is dropping slowly. Getting back into running is hard as heck but I'm pushing through it.

It was very nice to finish a mile in under 15 minutes on Monday evening. That felt very good. I know most people hate running on the treadmill but I've always preferred it. Air conditioning just puts me in a better mood.

18 Minute Mile

When we first brought Vader home I had a few rules. 1) He is not allowed on the bed. 2)He is not allowed on the couch. Well, I let him get in the bed all the time now. He doesn't sleep with us but on Sunday mornings, I usually get out of bed early to clean and make breakfast and I let him take my spot and lay there for a little while with Stephen. AND I recently started letting him lay on the couch with us. It started on the 4th of July. He was scared because of the fireworks so I put a blanket on the couch and let him lay on it. He was so happy. Seeing him happy brings me joy so I've let him do that a few more times recently. I know I say this every time I post a photo of him but how cute is he? I love that he's smiling in this photo. Unfortunately, every time I pull my phone out he looks the other way unless I'm holding food!

I don't read books very often anymore. I know, it's sad. I would like to read more but I find myself reading articles and blogs online more often than books. I ordered Orange is the New Black recently and started reading it. I'm really enjoying it. I read a few pages before bed every night...and then I fall asleep. 

A new coffee shop opened in Temecula and I was very excited to try it. I ordered an iced Americano and added my protein to it and it was delicious. I brought Stephen back the next morning to try it as well. It's a little pricey but it was good. I like supporting locally owned coffee shops.

My other go to drink lately is my homemade cocktail. And it's mostly water! I fill my cup almost to the top with water, I add lemonade Crystal Light mix, a little tequila (or a lot, depending on how my day has been), a little salt and ice. It's delicious and it tastes like a margarita. Maybe even better because I'm in the comfort of my own home and it's sugar free.

Stephen and I went to a Star Wars themed birthday party this past weekend. My co-worker's son turned two and we would never miss a Star Wars themed anything. We bought him his first light saber and he was so excited. He kept saying, "Open. Open." 

My trainer has given me a training plan for my half marathon in January. I need to run twenty miles by the end of July. Then I'll have to run forty miles in August but I don't want to think about that yet. I started last night. I ran one mile and then I nearly died. I am so out of shape. An 18 minute mile is nothing for me to be proud of but it's just the beginning. I've never been concerned with speed anyways. I only care about finishing.

Day Three

I feel so much better today. I woke up and drank some coffee with almond milk, like I do every morning. Tonight is our grad dinner at the college where I work so I'll be working late, which means I went in late. It throws off my whole day. I know I'll be going to lunch later than normal so I tried to eat breakfast a little later. 

I used to love eating big breakfasts but now I prefer to hoard my macros so I eat smaller meals at breakfast. This morning I ate an Oh Yeah! Victory Bar. These are so good. I can't decide if I like them or Combat Bars better. 

Speaking of Combat Bars, I had one for a snack. I was starving by 1 and I wasn't planning on going to lunch until 3.

Thursdays are Chicken Soft Taco day at Del Taco. 3 for $2.29. So you better believe I ordered 3. I also had an Iced Venti Starbucks Double Shot with Sugar Free Hazelnut and I poured Premier Protein on top.

I had this post sitting in my drafts and I honestly do not remember what I ate for dinner on Thursday night. I just looked in myfitnesspal. I had made a breakfast pizza with Kodiak cakes. And of course, I ate it before taking a photo. As you can see, posting what I eat in a day every single day was just too hard. I kind of knew it would be. I'll continue to post what I eat in a day occasionally. Stay tuned. Another post is coming shortly.

Day Two

Well, yesterday was a bust. BUT that's okay because I'm here to document what happened and I'm starting over today. That's all that matters. I'm writing yesterday's post this morning because I wasn't feeling too well last night {lovely cramps}. This was also the reason why I didn't hit my macros yesterday. 

For breakfast I had nonfat Greek yogurt mixed with PE Science Snickerdoodle protein. I love this stuff together. I pretend it's frosting. Yes, frosting for breakfast. Whatever helps me get that protein in. I also had a cup of coffee with almond milk.

Yesterday was the 5th birthday of the college campus where I work so they had pizza for everyone. I had actually logged two slices in the morning and figured that would be my lunch. When I went down to grab my two slices, there was only enough for one slice per person. The beauty of macros! I deleted one of the slices from myfitnesspal and I figured out something else for lunch. Because I knew I wouldn't have made it on one slice of pizza. So I ran to Starbucks on lunch and got a black iced coffee and added my Premier Protein to it, like usual. And I grabbed two chicken soft tacos from Del Taco. These are actually really good and the macros aren't too bad. 

I usually start to get hungry around 4 so I always have a protein bar handy. This one is my new favorite.

The rest of the day went downhill. All I could stomach for dinner were some pretzels. I ended up going to bed pretty early just because I wasn't feeling well. So I was short on my macros. At least I didn't go over. Below are my final numbers. Today will be much better!

Day One

I hope you all had a beautiful holiday weekend with your loved ones. Mine was perfect. Very low key and laid back. Just the way I like it. I have been wanting to put a bandanna on Vader for a while now. I borrowed one of Stephen's for this photo. And now I need to get him one in every color. How cute does he look?! He's so funny though. As soon as I pull out my phone to snap a photo, he turns his head. He gets camera shy. Or he just prefers his profile.

I wrote a couple months back about how I wanted to change the direction of my blog. You can read that post here if you'd like. At the time, I really did want to stop worrying so much about the scale and the numbers and every little thing that I ate. I constantly remind myself - you were not put on this earth to lose weight. It was nice pretending not to care for a little while but as my clothes got tighter and tighter, I could no longer pretend anymore. I do care. I want to feel healthy and I want to be fit. So, I'm going to make a u-turn with my blog and go back in the direction I was going before. I may not be able to fulfill this 100% but my goal is going to be to document everything I eat on here. I'll be tracking in myfitnesspal every day so I'll just move it over to my blog at the end of every day or early the next morning. I want to do this until I drop some of the weight that I have gained since the beginning of the year - about 30 pounds. Yikes, I know. It's hard to admit. I am 15 pounds away from my heaviest weight and I don't ever want to see that number again! 

I'll be tracking macros from Poppy Locks. She had sent me numbers in January and I had to email her back last month and admit that I've gained weight and I needed new numbers. I'm all set to be successful now and I have no excuses. I will not be cutting out any food groups. Everything will be in moderation. If I want something "unhealthy" I will work my other numbers around to make sure it fits. Are you ready to follow along? Here goes. 

Breakfast was a cup coffee with almond milk {at home} and a Premier Protein shake at my desk. I don't always drink just a protein shake for breakfast but if I don't have time to cook something, this is the best quick option for me. For a snack {not pictured}, I had a Combat bar. 

For lunch I ate leftovers from last night. I'll be honest, I did not weigh the steak. I'm guessing it was about 4 ounces. And half a cup of cauliflower fried rice. This was delicious. I'm in love with this teriyaki steak from Costco. 

While on lunch I ran to Starbucks and got a Venti iced coffee with sugar free caramel syrup and then when I got back to my office, I added another Premier Protein shake to it. I figured it's better than adding cream at Starbucks. And for an afternoon snack, I ate two cherry pop-tarts. I made sure to add dinner in prior to my pop-tarts to make sure they would fit. Pop-tarts are one of my weaknesses. I will probably make them fit often.

After work my husband and I took Vader out on a walk. When I got home I made myself a breakfast pizza for dinner. This is one of my favorites. It's so good!

After inputting my dinner, I still had some carbs left so I finished off my day with a beverage. I mixed water with sparkling water, crystal light and 1 ounce of vodka. I call it my "mostly water" drink.

Below are my final numbers. Staying within 5 grams of each macro is allowed so the fact that I went over my protein by 4 grams is perfectly okay. And if I'm going to go over any macro, I'd rather go over by protein. Day one was a success. Thanks for reading. Heading off to bed now. I'll be back tomorrow, I promise.
